A Somber and Emotional Visit to the Killing Fields
Located just about 15 km from downtown Phnom Penh, the Choeung Ek Killing Fields mark one of the most tragic periods in Cambodia’s history under the Khmer Rouge regime. From 1975 to 1979, thousands of innocent civilians were executed and buried here. Today, the site is preserved as a memorial area, featuring a glass-walled stupa holding victims’ remains, mass graves, and a quiet walking path with an audio guide that recounts real and heartbreaking stories of survival and loss.
The atmosphere is deeply silent and solemn, turning every step into a moment of reflection. Visitors are kindly advised to dress modestly, remain respectful, and avoid inappropriate photography, as a way of honoring both the victims and local people.
Due to the emotional and sensitive nature of the site, it is not recommended for young children or those who are easily affected.
