Royal Palace Phnom Penh – Unveiling the Splendor of Cambodia’s Monarchy
Built in 1866 under the reign of King Norodom, the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh stands as a majestic emblem of Cambodia’s monarchy and a prime example of traditional Khmer architecture. Overlooking the confluence of the Tonlé Sap and Mekong Rivers, the complex glows with golden spires, intricate carvings, and an atmosphere steeped in history and spirituality.
Visitors can walk through key highlights such as the Throne Hall, where royal ceremonies are held, and the iconic Silver Pagoda, whose floors are paved with over 5,000 pure silver tiles. Within the pagoda, sacred relics like the Emerald Buddha and a life-sized Golden Buddha adorned with 9,584 diamonds inspire awe.
The palace complex is divided into distinct functional areas, each with its unique role in royal life:
- Throne Hall (Preah Tineang Tevea Vinichhay): The king and court dignitaries once met here to discuss state affairs. Moonlight Pavilion (Chanchhaya Pavilion): Used for public addresses, royal banquets, and traditional performances.
- Phochani Pavilion: A multipurpose hall for classical dance performances and official gatherings.
- Napoleon III Pavilion: A rare French-style building gifted by Emperor Napoleon III, showcasing colonial influence.
- Stupas and Ramayana Murals: Housing royal remains and epic mythological murals that add artistic and spiritual depth to the palace grounds.
