Wake up early to go to the morning market, which is crowded with hill tribe villagers selling fresh fruits and local items. Go for a walk if you feel inclined to explore and experience the vibrant atmosphere. The Mekong River boat ride resumes, and the riverside villages are toured, reflecting the traditional Laotian way of life.
A tasty lunch is served on the boat while the boat heads towards Pak Ou Caves. This sacred site is hidden in the face of a high limestone cliff and houses many Buddha images of different sizes and shapes. Spend some time discovering before continuing downstream. You will reach Luang Prabang by early evening, where your guide and driver will welcome you to transfer to your hotel for a well-deserved night’s rest.
If you are an early riser, do not miss the alms-giving ceremony. It is a peaceful moment when monks in orange robes silently collect offerings at dawn. For the best experience, visit the town crossroads at about 05:00 AM and watch this essential tradition unfold.
Begin the day with a visit to Vat Xieng Thong, a gorgeous temple reflecting Laos’ artistic and religious culture. Then, head to the National Museum, featuring both Lao and French architecture, and afterward visit Wat Mai. As the sun begins to set, climb Mount Phousi for breathtaking views in all directions.
Your next excursion is to Kuang Si Falls, a stunning turquoise waterfall. En route, walk through scenic rice fields and charming villages, with time to dawdle. Upon arrival, enjoy a delicious lunch with a view of the falls, then take a dip to cool off.
Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. Meals are at your leisure. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
The tour starts at 08:00 AM at your hotel or our office. We take a 40 km drive on Route 13 to Ban Houay Lo, the starting point of the trek.
Travel along green rice paddies, bamboo forests, and serene creeks as you go on to three surrounding villages. En route, see the distinctive culture and lifestyle of the villagers. After a brief climb, meet the main road again, where our vehicle will be waiting for the drive back to Luang Prabang (about one hour).
Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. Dinner is on your own. Overnight at the hotel.
Begin your day with a picturesque train ride from Luang Prabang to Vientiane, where a fascinating journey through the Laos capital awaits you.
Start at Vat Sisaket, which has thousands of small images of Buddha on its walls. Then go to Vat Phra Keo, an old royal temple that was once charged with housing the famous Emerald Buddha. Behold the nation’s most important religious monument, Pha That Louang, a golden stupa shining in the sunlight. Patuxay, just down the road, is Vientiane’s version of the Arc de Triomphe and looms high. Go up to the top for a breathtaking view of the city.
Enjoy the rest of the evening at your leisure. Meals on your own. Overnight at the hotel.
The trip on Route 13 starts at 08:00 AM. The initial stop is Wat Prabath Phonsane, a serene temple with cultural and historical importance. A short visit gives time to appreciate its beauty before moving on.
As the route cuts through Phou Hin Poun NPA, the landscape changes. The towering limestone mountains stand out, forests run for miles, and rice paddies color the scenery in vibrant green. A picnic lunch is a lovely break to enjoy the breathtaking nature.
Upon arrival in Ban Kong Lor, you check in and relax prior to visiting the renowned Kong Lor Caves. A short walk takes you to the entrance, where you board a waiting long-tail boat. You will float down the underground section of the Hin Boun River, 7.5 kilometers through a magical cave system. Upon reaching the other side, you can visit nearby villages and see the local way of life.
The return journey follows the same path, down river through the cave. Late in the afternoon, you will be transferred back to the hotel for a leisurely evening. Overnight in Ban Kong Lor.
At 06:30 AM, begin the day with a peaceful walk to surrounding villages. Follow your guide, take the morning exercise and see how locals start their day.
You will travel for four hours to reach Thakhek, a nice town with old colonial-era buildings lining the streets. Upon arrival, take a rest and have lunch at Inthira Thakhek, which is a great place for a tasty meal that you will be treating yourself to.
In the afternoon, continue toward Savannakhet. The trip takes around an hour and a half, with a stop along the way to visit That Ing Hang temple. This temple is a very sacred place for both Thai and Laotian Buddhists, so it’s a key place for prayer.
Once you reach Savannakhet, take your time to notice the distinct features of the town. French villas recount stories of the faraway past, and St. Teresa Catholic Church is a tranquil place to go. You can go to the modest yet intriguing Dinosaur Museum to learn about prehistoric times with fossils that go back millions of years. When the sun starts to set, take a refreshing swim or a relaxing walk by the Mekong River. Spend the night in Savannakhet.
Later, visit Pakse, starting with Wat Luang, a beautifully decorated temple where monks collect alms at sunrise. Behind it, the Mekong River offers stunning views. Nearby, Wat Phabad, the city’s oldest temple, is believed to hold Buddha’s footprint. Continue to the Golden Buddha Temple, perched on a hill with panoramic views of Pakse.
Return to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Meals are at your own expense. Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, walk along Dao Heung Market, where fresh fruits and vegetables, souvenirs, and the daily lives of locals are openly showcased in colorful stalls. The vibrant atmosphere offers a good insight into Pakse culture.
Escape the city and head to the cooler green Bolaven Plateau. Here, the climate is cool, with numerous coffee plantations, and the natural beauty is breathtaking. Along your way, take a pause to see the breathtaking Tad Fane, Tad Yeang, and Phasoum waterfalls, which fall into the jungle below. These scenic areas are perfect for capturing great photos.
Take a break with a cup of local tea or coffee at a beautiful plantation before continuing to ethnic villages like Ban A Luck and Ban Kok Poung. Walk around the villages, see their special traditions, and discover how the locals lead their daily lives. Come back to Pakse late in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day relaxing on your own. You will dine on your own. Overnight at the hotel.
Begin the day exploring Wat Phou, an ancient Khmer temple complex that stands as one of the oldest archaeological sites in Laos. Perched on a hillside with panoramic views of the Mekong River, it showcases intricate sandstone carvings and sacred shrines. Originally dedicated to Hindu deities, the temple later became an important Buddhist site, blending spiritual traditions over centuries. A visit here offers deep insights into the rich history and architectural heritage of the region.
Later, travel to Khone Papheng, the most powerful waterfall in Southeast Asia. Spanning nearly 10 kilometers, its rushing waters create a dramatic spectacle, earning it the name “Jewel of the Mekong.” The roaring cascades and surrounding lush landscape make it a must-see natural wonder. As the day winds down, return to Don Khong Island and settle into your hotel. Enjoy a leisurely evening at your own pace. Dinner is by your own arrangement.
Spend the day exploring Don Det and Don Khone, two peaceful islands often called a backpacker’s paradise. Glide along the Mekong on a boat trip, passing by children splashing in the water and fishermen tending to their nets. The river’s charm unfolds at every turn.
A tuk-tuk ride takes you to Ban Khone fishing village, where the remains of French railway tracks and the breathtaking Liphi Waterfall await. Wander through the village, soak in the tranquil atmosphere, and capture stunning photos of daily life.
In the afternoon, board a motorboat toward the Cambodian border, home to the rare Irrawaddy dolphins. If luck is on your side, you may spot them gracefully swimming in the river. As the day winds down, travel back to Pakse by land and enjoy the evening at your leisure.
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before preparing for departure. Depending on your flight schedule, our driver will take you to the International Airport for your journey home or to your next destination. The room remains available until noon. Safe travels, and we hope to see you again!
