Introduction To The Dam Market

Dam Market from above

Dam Market, also known as Cho Dam, is the largest and most famous central market in Nha Trang, located about 2 kilometers away from the city center. Dam Market has a unique round architecture designed to resemble the lotus flower, while its roof has a design inspired by the waves. The market building is just as memorable as its function. The market measures 5,270 square meters and serves 3,000 people, making it a large meeting place for both residents and travelers.

The market has tons of seafood-fresh and dried, clothing, souvenirs, fabric, and many items unique to the south coast of Vietnam.

History Of The Dam Market

The Dam Market has its roots in 1908, when it was established as a minor local market by its residents. At that time, it occupied an area of approximately 7 hectares, near what is today the beginning of Phan Boi Chau Street. The density of the town increased, and the original open-air market could not serve the community anymore and, therefore, disappeared.

In 1961, a redevelopment project was proposed to redevelop the market in a new and more organized way. By 1970, it was officially redeveloped as a vast, modern trading center made in an original architectural style. Since then, it has occupied and continues to occupy the role of one of the busiest commercial centers in Nha Trang, and remains a proud representation of the restless life and cultural life of the coastal city.

Unique Architecture Of The Dam Market

You will also find dried seafood items like squid jerky, tamarind-flavored squid, and dried shrimp, which are favorites for tourists to take home. The vendors will happily clean, marinate, or prepare seafood for you, making it even easier to cook when at home. This section is heaven for all seafood lovers.

Right Wing Of The Dam Market

The right wing showcases beloved specialties and the original cuisine of Nha Trang. There are stalls selling regional pantry staples and traditional products like rice paper, fish cakes, and various types of fish sauce.

This is also where you can join the dining crowd at the food court, sampling an amazing array of authentic food items like fish noodle soup, grilled pork rolls, or vermicelli with fish cakes. Explore Nha Trang Cathedral, The Gothic Heart Of The City

Nha Trang Cathedral is among the stunning Gothic-style landmarks of the early 20th century. With its imposing bell tower, stained glass, and a serene landscape, it now carries both the cultural symbolism and a spiritual sanctuary.

Introduction To Nha Trang Cathedral

Nha Trang Cathedral 6

The Nha Trang Cathedral, Christ the King Cathedral, or Stone Church is a wonderful Gothic-style Catholic church located atop a hill in the center of Nha Trang. Constructed between 1928 and 1933 by French missionaries, it features solid architectural design with its stained glass windows, high bell tower, a clock tower with a crucifix, and tranquil stone facades.

The faithful come here to worship, whereas tourists go to soak up its special quietness in contrast to the busy city. Its interior is calm, bright, and inviting, thanks to the colorful stained glass that allows soft sunlight to pour in. Atop the hill, photographers find a vantage point to shoot the wide-angle view of the ocean, rooftops, and hills. It is perfectly suited for reflection and a glimpse into Vietnam’s colonial history.

History Of Nha Trang Cathedral

During the 19th century, Christianity was fairly new in Nha Trang, with hardly more than the count of twenty followers. Due to the absence of churches, the nascent believers had to make a long journey to Quy Nhon, the site of the Catholic headquarters. At that time, Nha Trang was endowed only with a small chapel by the sea, standing where the Bishop’s Palace is now.

Father Louis Vallet, a zealous missionary who led a life of solitude, worked at spreading the faith and drawing more believers. Seeing the great urge, Father Louis Vallet took upon himself the responsibility of constructing a fitting church for the people. Construction started on September 3, 1928. It was on Nui Bong, a small hill some 12 meters in height. Around 500 mines were detonated to clear the site.

The church was dedicated to Christ the King during the feast of Saint Joan of Arc on May 14, 1933. In 1934, the bell, duly named Thérèse of the Child Jesus, was blessed; the bell was donated by a Catholic from Saigon. Later, in 1935, the bell tower was inaugurated. Father Louis Vallet was buried at the foot of the hill along the path leading to the church after his death on October 24, 1945. A great increase in the number of believers was seen by 1960.

Unique Architecture Of Nha Trang Cathedral

The Gothic Western structure of the Nha Trang Cathedral was beautifully erected with massive stone blocks, giving it some aspects of both ancient and noble looks. It stands boldly against the blue sky with a white Christian cross at its pointed roof, helping to make it one of the most easily recognizable buildings in the city.

Rear, Side, And Corridor Design

Rear, Side, And Corridor Design of Nha Trang Cathedral

Entering by Gate No. 1 on Thai Nguyen Street, one first has to walk along the back of the cathedral before getting to its front façade. The rear walls are made up of stone blocks carefully stacked together and have borne great testimony to time for close to a century now. The church was begun in 1928 by French priest Louis Vallet and completed in 1933. After he died in 1945, he was buried at the foot of the hill near that cathedral to which he had devoted his life.

A broad, bending way goes to the church’s side, showing a calm look at Nha Trang city through its iron bars. Across from the path is part of the land with gravestones of local church members, each carved with deep Bible lines like “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord” or “Whoever believes in me, though they die will live.” These words give a serious, holy feel to the place.

From the side, the rising bell tower looks even more striking while a run of pointed arch halls grabs the sight. These Gothic arches are useful and pretty-they offer shade and air flow while letting in light and fresh winds to move around.

The Bell Tower

The bell tower rests on a firm raised ground and is among the standout parts of Nha Trang Cathedral. It goes up 38 meters from street level and shows Gothic Revival style with keen lines and a feel of grandeur. At the very peak sits a slim cross, showing faith, and right below it are four huge clock faces looking north, south, east, and west.

The ringing of the bell, set inside this tall building, has for a long time marked key religious events and community meetings, making the cathedral even more a part of the daily flow of local life.

The Facade

The Facade of Nha Trang Cathedral

A wide patio leads to a large open yard, surrounded by a fence and a gate that opens fully only when it’s service time. Most visitors who want to view the entire edifice sit on benches built along the fence, from where they can behold its majesty. The Gothic inspiration marks those stained-glass windows, and the most impressive is the rose window placed high above the main door. This floral design, typically Gothic, not only adds beauty to the church but also changes sunlight into marvelous patterns inside the sanctuary.

JHS, which means Jesus Hominum Salvator or “Jesus – Savior of Mankind,” is written above the grand doorway. This spiritual symbol adds another important meaning, reminding everyone of the true purpose of such a large building and the strong belief held by its members.

The Interior Of The Sanctuary

Visitors generally come in during the afternoon via a side door, and they are in a place entirely dissimilar to the busy streets outside. There’s hushing up the guests who go about taking in the architectural details or clicking photos of the peaceful interior.

Originally, it was the range of vibrant stained-glass windows that caught the eye. At evening’s sun shining through your windows from the west could make it glow with rich colors and create a mystical, almost otherworldly light based upon the Biblical stories that it shares. The church never needed to be in the dark, as thoughtful design always gets appropriate light throughout the day.

Fine stone pillars add to the height and splendor of the place with their carvings. Five large stained-glass panels depict scenes from the Bible over the altar, which is the main focus inside the sanctuary. Facing toward this same altar is the choir loft in which a statue of Christ stands framed by a glowing rose window so that all within shine with divine beauty and spiritual solemnity.

The Cham people believed that Po Ina Nagar was the creator of the earth, trees, and rice, that she was a divine protector against storms and flooding, and that she brought prosperity and peace to her people.

Over its long history, Po Nagar Temple has served as an important spiritual and cultural center for the Cham people. It features a distinct architecture, old carvings, and many mysteries that show both the devotion and artistry of the Cham civilization. Po Nagar Temple, listed among the national architectural monuments in 1979, is now a sacred place of worship as well as one of Nha Trang’s most loved tourist places.

Unique Architecture Of Po Nagar Temple

Nha Trang’s Po Nagar Cham Towers are separated into four general sections with very different architecture and contrasting histories. It is possible to walk through each of the sections and appreciate the craftsmanship of the old Cham people as well as the cultural depth enshrined within the temple complex.

Grand Entry Gate

Grand Entry Gate

The entrance gate is an impressive creation intended to blend with the rest of the temple complex. While the gate itself has weathered away, the stone steps leading up to the intermediate level have survived. Though partly ruined, the sheer size and original layout of the gate still evoke a glimpse of the original glory of the temple.

Mandapa (Forecourt)

As visitors proceed through the gates, they find themselves in the Mandapa, which is where the Cham people prepared their offerings before offering their prayers. Today, only two full rows of eight-sided brick pillars remain, five large and six small under each row. They are perfectly aligned. This mid-level is connected to the upper temple level by a steep brick staircase, which serves a purpose while demonstrating architectural magnificence and ingenuity.

Majestic Brick Temple Towers

The upper temple area contains two lines of towers within four stone walls that still exist only as the western wall and the southern wall. In the front row, there are three towers, and the largest is called the Po Nagar Tower, directly in the middle of the line of towers. In the second row, there were originally three towers; however, only one still exists.

Each tower has a hollow inside, an entrance that faces east, decorative ridges, pilasters, and cornices. The tops of the towers contain small tower-shaped decorations, and the outside of the towers contains statues and reliefs of gods, heavenly beings, and sacred animals.

Stele Area

Stele Area

An additional feature of Po Nagar is a series of ancient steles, each linked to the history of Po Nagar or events that took place there. The first stele is located at the rear of the towers as one enters the site. It provides mythological information about the goddess Thien Y A Na, which was written by the Cham and relocated to this site. It was transcribed into the Han-Nom language in 1856 by Phan Thanh Gian.

The second stele, installed in 1871 by eight officials from Khanh Hoa and Binh Thuan, celebrates the friendship between the two provinces. The third stele, put in place in 1972, describes the goddess Po Ina Nagar in modern Vietnamese script. The fourth and latest stele, installed in 2010, provides a history of the Temple complex of Po Nagar, including as much of the site as possible.

Discover Hidden Ba Ho Waterfall, Nha Trang’s Secret Escape

Ba Ho is a waterfall in Nha Trang that boasts three lakes hiding behind a beautiful forest and under rocky cliffs. It’s a great destination for adventure seekers, who can swim and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere in the lush surroundings!

Introduction To Ba Ho Waterfall

Ba Ho Waterfall 3

Ba Ho Waterfall, situated in the Ninh Hoa district of Khanh Hoa province just outside of Nha Trang, is a stunning natural attraction. The name Ba Ho refers to the three cascading natural pools that have been hollowed out by river streams that descend from the hills. The waterfall is situated between cliffs, as well as a dense forest with dark blue water. Ba Ho is underdeveloped and remains largely undeveloped, allowing tourists a consequential experience with a breathtaking wonder of nature.

Whether you enjoy swimming in beautiful green pools, hiking, or walking along various trails lined with running waterfalls, or simply enjoying peace with nature, Ba Ho is all of those things. Ba Ho offers unique experiences for tourists as well, such as afternoon cliff-jumping, camping, or forest trekking, all in the cascade waterfalls and rocks.

History Of Ba Ho Waterfall

Ba Ho, meaning “Three Lakes,” got its name from three large pools formed along the stream. The pools were created by water that flowed down from Hon Son Mountain with an elevation of 660 meters. As the stream flows down from the mountain and along cliffs and limestone ranges and down until it reaches Phu Huu fields in Ninh Ich commune and then pours into Nha Phu Lagoon, that is how we have three appealing rock basins, each with different, unique beauty.

In addition to its natural beauty, the pools at Ba Ho are also tied to intriguing local legends told for generations. These legends add a touch of mystery and cultural authenticity, which takes Ba Ho beyond scenic nature to a place where rich culture is preserved.

Top 3 Iconic Attractions In Ba Ho Waterfall

Ba Ho Waterfall 6

Visiting Ba Ho Waterfall is a fantastic trip to three breathtaking natural pools, each offering unique character and adventure. From exhilarating cliff jumps to relaxing camping spots, each destination provides different experiences.

Pool 1

The first pool is the lowest elevation and is typically the liveliest, especially when the rainy season makes the waterfall flow beautifully. For visitors seeking adrenaline, this is the first place for cliff jumps, a widely favored adventure for many tourists. After being fitted with safety equipment, a visit to the first pool has visitors jumping off rocky river banks into cool, refreshing water, with shouts and laughs following.

Pool 2

The second pool, situated amid large trees, offers a more tranquil and secluded environment, and most visitors choose camping, hanging out, and eating down by the pools in nature. The hike to the second pool is steep but difficult, and so tends to rely upon other visitors to create the atmosphere of the hiking experience, meaning this area is generally less populated. If you enjoy trekking and want to find quiet and beautiful places, choose your visit in the dry season when the shallow pools reveal large rock formations in tall, thin grass and thick shrubbery.

Pool 3

The third and final pool is for those who want to be adventurous. If you want to return from here, you can go back the same way you came or take a forest trail that crosses the stream and is marked with red arrows. This option is more strenuous, but, more than likely, will provide vigorous explorers with new and memorable experiences in the wilderness.

From there, you will follow Pham Van Dong Street, then you will take Highway 1A, following signs that state Nam Ninh Hoa commune. Follow the sign, and when you reach the T-junction at the end of the concrete road, you will turn left, and then you will follow the straight road until you reach the entrance gate.

To access the pools, you will need to walk up a rugged trail through the forest along the streams. This is about hiking, which is an adventure in itself and may appeal to people who like nature and exploratory activities.

The trail is well-marked to give you better chances of not getting lost on your hike. There are electric cars for rent at the entrance gate if you choose, but they only go two-thirds of the way before you need to hike the last stretch yourself, for the fun of it, to the waterfall.

Explore Hon Tre Island, The Untouched Sea Pearl In Nha Trang

Hon Tre Island, which is the largest island in Nha Trang Bay, is a tropical oasis with sandy beaches, mountain ranges, and international standard resorts. It combines natural splendor and exciting leisure activities, creating the perfect destination for your vacation.

Introduction To Hon Tre Island

Hon Tre Island 2

Being the largest island in Nha Trang Bay, Hon Tre Island, aka Bamboo Island, is a must-visit destination for any traveler seeking beauty and excitement. Surrounded by turquoise waters and cloaked with green hills, the island feels like a tropical retreat but is just a short boat ride or cable car ride from Nha Trang city.

What really sets Hon Tre apart is a combination of natural beauty and world-class entertainment. The iconic cable car crossing the sea, sandy beaches, and fine dining all exist in a single terrain where visitors can experience thrill and tranquility. Hon Tre Island is an experience that takes you through the finest coastal beauty of Nha Trang, mingled with leisure and fun.

History Of Hon Tre Island

Hon Tre island, previously referred to as “Hon Trẻ” or “Dam Mong” in historical documents, means “the child of the lagoon.” In truth, and more appropriately under the French colonial influence and without the use of diacritics on the maps, “Hon Tre” as it has been written and is known today, eventually settled in.

For many generations, Hon Tre island has remained a small fishing village growing very slowly in isolation due to the longer time it took to cross, and many hours also for those arriving by rowing boat or ferry. The evolving remote condition changed overnight when several innovative and strategically minded Vietnamese investors in the early 2000s saw its tourism potential. In 2003, Hon Ngoc Viet – the first resort (which means Pearl of Vietnam) opened and changed the direction of tourist development and visitation to the island.

Since then, in just two decades, world-class tourism projects have changed Hon Tre into a global tourism entity. Today, the island is a combination of unspoilt natural beauty mixed with modern luxury.
