An Giang Province in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam has the spectacular Tra Su Cajuput Forest, an example of Vietnam’s natural beauty of wetland regions to the south of Vietnam. The 850 hectares of forest are home to countless cajuput trees that tower over waterways covered in layers of green duckweed. You’ll travel through narrow canals in wooden boats surrounded by a green world and only hear birds or oars hitting the surface of the water.

In addition to its striking scenery, Tra Su is truly a hotspot of biodiversity with over 140 species of plants, as well as 70 species of birds, including rare and endemic species such as storks, herons, and others. Visiting Tra Su is an opportunity for you to become enveloped in the silent rhythm of travel in the Mekong Delta. For travelers who appreciate the natural serenity and countryside beauty, the Tra Su Cajuput Forest should be a stop on a southern Vietnam travel itinerary.

History Of Tra Su Cajuput Forest

Established in 1983, Tra Su Cajuput Forest was formerly a low-lying wasteland in the Tinh Bien District in An Giang Province. In a pilot project to improve the soil quality and stop upstream flooding, local authorities established cajuput trees in the area to see if these trees would thrive. Over the years, Tra Su cajuput forest ended up as a plentiful wetland characteristic of a wetland ecosystem, creating an abundant environment for several endangered animal and plant species.

In recognition of its special significance, in 2003, the Tra Su cajuput forest was established as a special-use forest for landscape protection, as this establishment represented the classic wetland ecosystem type in the typical western Hau River. Since then, flora and fauna have flourished, and dozens of flora and fauna have made this establishment their habitat.

By 2018, the forest attracted hundreds of eco-tourism visitors each week. The necessary infrastructure was developed for visitation (the bamboo bridge is the longest in Vietnam), to provide visitation while allowing the forest to maintain its natural beauty, while also allowing key aspects of sustainable tourism development.
