Hanoi

Vietnam’s Beloved Capital

Overview

If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam, Hanoi, the vibrant capital, should be at the top of your list. With over a thousand years of history, Hanoi is the country’s cultural and political heart.

Wandering through the charming narrow streets of the Old Quarter, you can discover hidden temples, old houses, and a way of life that hasn’t changed for generations. This sense of timelessness blends effortlessly with the city’s modern cafes, stylish restaurants, and lively art scenes. As evening falls, the city comes alive with rooftop bars and buzzing local “bia hoi” spots, offering a perfect mix of old-world charm and contemporary energy.

        FAQs

        1. Is it worth spending a full day in Hanoi, or should I just use it as a base for Halong Bay and Ninh Binh?
Yes, Hanoi deserves at least a full day. The Old Quarter, museums, historical sites, and unique street food offer a rich cultural experience you won’t find elsewhere.
        2. What’s the difference between staying in the Old Quarter vs. French Quarter?
The Old Quarter is vibrant, local, and busy — great for food and culture. The French Quarter is quieter, more elegant, with upscale hotels and colonial architecture.
        3. Can I visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum anytime?
No, it’s closed on Mondays and Fridays, and only open in the mornings. Also, it closes for a few months in the fall for maintenance. Dress modestly and expect a line.
        4. Is the Train Street open or closed now?
It’s technically closed for safety, but there are still some cafes that allow visitors. The best way to visit is through a local guide who knows which spots are accessible.
        5. Can I do a same-day return from Hanoi to Halong Bay?
It’s possible, but rushed. A day trip involves 5–7 hours of driving. If time allows, an overnight cruise is more relaxing and worthwhile.
        6. Are airport transfers included in my tour, or do I need to book them separately?
Are airport transfers included in my tour, or do I need to book them separately? If you’ve booked a tailor-made tour, airport transfers are usually included and pre-arranged. Otherwise, you can take a taxi or Grab.
        7. Is it noisy to stay in the Old Quarter?
Yes, especially on busy streets. Some hotels offer quiet rooms at the back or with soundproofing — something worth asking about before booking.
        8. What’s the best place for authentic pho in Hanoi?
Travelers visiting Hanoi often recommend places like Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su, Pho Gia Truyen (Bat Dan Street) or Pho Thin – famous and always busy. Ask your guide or hotel for trusted, less touristy spots too.
        9. How should I cross the street in Hanoi? It seems chaotic.
Hanoi traffic looks scary, but move slowly and confidently — don’t run. Drivers are used to navigating around pedestrians.
        10. Is tipping expected in Hanoi?
Not mandatory, but appreciated. Around 5–10% in restaurants and $2–5 for guides or drivers is common.
        11. Can I drink tap water in Hanoi?
No, it’s best to drink bottled or filtered water, even for brushing teeth. Most hotels provide free bottled water.
        12. Are SIM cards easy to get at the airport?
Yes. You’ll find several counters at the airport offering tourist SIMs with data. Viettel, Vinaphone, and Mobifone are reliable options.
        13. What’s the weather like in Hanoi in winter? Do I need a jacket?
Yes. From December to February, it can be cold (as low as 10°C) and damp. A warm jacket is recommended, especially for early morning tours.
        14. How early should I leave for the airport from Hanoi center?
At least 2.5 to 3 hours before an international flight, and 2 hours for domestic flights. Traffic can be unpredictable during peak times.
        15. What’s the usual dress code for temples and pagodas?
Modest clothing: cover shoulders and knees. Remove hats and shoes when entering worship areas.
