Va Cave Phong Nha: A One-Of-A-Kind Trek Cave For Adventurous Lovers

Va Cave is an impressive hidden cave that is located inside Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, well-known for its cone-shaped stalagmites, pristine streams, and untouched environment, making Va Cave a great destination for adventure travelers who are seeking a real-life experience of exploring caves in Vietnam.

Introduction To Va Cave

Va Cave is a breathtaking natural wonder located inside the core area of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, located in Quang Binh Province, Vietnam, only 52 meters away from the back entrance of Son Doong Cave, the world’s largest cave. Known for its unique geological features, Va Cave measures 1.7 kilometers long, comprising a large number of conical stalactites and stalagmites that line sedimentation lakes and emerald-colored underground rivers, forming a breathtakingly beautiful landscape that cannot be found anywhere else.

introduction to va cave

People also come to Va Cave not just because of its geological rarity but also because of the adventure that comes with exploring the site. Getting to the site involves hiking through the jungle, crossing streams, and climbing over rocky surfaces, all done with the aid of harnesses. The fact that the site is linked to other caves in the area, together with the presence of a mysterious ecosystem that has blind fish species that exist nowhere else in the world, makes the site in the country’s most famous national park a true adventure destination.

History of the Va Cave

The origin of the name “Va Cave” came from the region where the cave is found, which is a forest known as Va Forest by the local community. To this day, the origin of the name “Va” is still an unknown mystery. It was during an expedition into the jungle in 2010, searching for the back entrance to Son Doong Cave, that Ho Khanh reported the discovery of the Va Cave, which had an underground river flowing through it. Due to time constraints, the expedition team could not explore the cave, which remained unknown for the next few years.

Later, a short surveying expedition was organized to explore the caves in this isolated region, and Va Cave surpassed every expectation. Despite the fact that Ho Khanh first learned of Va Cave in 1992, it wasn’t until 2012 that it was officially measured and surveyed in detail by experts of the British-Vietnamese Cave Research Association. Following the completion of the survey, Ho Khanh decided that the name of the cave would be “Va Cave,” in recognition of the land it sits on, in tribute to the ancient Va Forest that has long protected this natural wonder.

Unique Geological Characteristics Of The Va Cave

It is also considered to be one of the most fascinating caves in Phong Nha-Ke Bang in terms of geology, as there are very few formations like these in Vietnam. A world of millions of years of formation by water and limestone lies hidden beneath the narrow passages of Va Cave.

Ancient Geological Formation Linked To Son Doong

Va Cave is part of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park’s core zone and has the same geological fault system and ecosystem as Son Doong Cave. The limestone massif at Va, which is estimated to be about 400-450 million years old, is considered to be around 2-3 million years old. However, there is some debate as to when exactly it was formed. The long geological development behind Va provides for a complex structure, with many layers of rock walls, and a wide variety of mineral formations within the cave.

Underground Stream And Hydrological System

The location in Va Cave that streams the most crystallographic of rivers also has a visible stream and is understood to originate directly from a subterranean water source that is unknown, yet connected to Khe Um. The source of Khe Um is theorized as being the only access to subterranean water for this particular region. As the water flows, it has built up many beautiful features, such as stalactites and cave pearls, and ultimately contributed to the buildup of sedimentary deposits, which form unique sedimentary deposits in the cave throughout the cave.

Cone-Shaped Stalagmite Forest

The most famous part of Va Cave is its vast number of underground, cone-shaped stalagmites, with nearly 1,000 formations of remarkably uniform size. The thousands of cone-shaped stalagmites in Va Cave rise steeply from the ground, often reaching heights of 1-2 m and typically having their tips aligned horizontally with each other. Va Cave’s unique characteristics of symmetry and sloppiness of Cone-shaped Stalagmites make it easily identifiable to cave explorers everywhere.

Rimstone Pools And Flowstone Structures

Va Cave contains one of the most extensive systems of floorstone pools known as rimstone pools. These floorstone pools were created by the development of very thick deposits of flowstone. The rimstone pools are shallow pools contained in natural mineral barriers called mineral dams, which are created by the deposition of calcium carbonate precipitated from the flowing water.

The mineral layers build up over time to form delicate terraced formations, which also led to the formation of numerous cone-shaped stalagmites that grow in the floorstone pools. The number of rimstone pools found in Va Cave is a very rare occurrence worldwide.

Exploring The Surreal Cone-Shaped Stalagmites

The rare cone-shaped stalagmites located in the Va Cave are one of this cave’s most distinct characteristics. These formations exist in a few other locations in the world. The cave’s limestone cone formations create a sensation of being inside an undiscovered city located beneath the surface of the earth.

Exploring The Surreal Cone-Shaped Stalagmites

As these formations have been created over thousands of years, the cave serves as an extensive living museum for the geological history of the planet, with trained guides explaining how each formation came about. Thus, this experience can be both beautiful and educational, which you should add to your to-do list in Quang Binh.

Swimming And Wading Through Underground Rivers

Guests will experience crystal-clear underground streams and pools that visitors must walk or swim through to fully experience the site. Entrance Fee

Yes, Va Cave is found in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, which means there is an entrance fee when you visit this region.

The current ticket price is 150,000 VND for an adult ticket, while free admission is given to children measuring below 1.3 meters. Kindly note that the ticket price may vary depending on the local regulations. Hence, it is always best to check the price at the ticket booth prior to your visit.

Best Time To Visit Va Cave

The best time of year to visit Va Cave is from January to August in Quang Binh, when it is dry and hence suitable weather conditions prevail in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. It should be noted that this is when tours to Va Cave are available with ease and when rain is unlikely to interrupt a tour of this cave.

During spring (January to April), the climate is generally pleasant and cool, and this is ideal for long hikes and sightseeing in the forested surroundings. Many tourists prefer this season because the vegetation is lush, and the natural environment is at its best after the cool winter season.

However, during May to August, despite the rising temperature, the trek remains pleasant as the area is mainly under the forest canopy, with the interior of the caves being cooler at 20-23°C. During the summer months, trekkers also get the chance to take refreshing dips at the underground streams of the caves.

After the month of August, the tours are usually put on hold due to the beginning of the rainy season, during which the trails become slippery, and the water levels in the caves might rise. It is advisable to visit Va Cave during the dry season for the best experience.

How To Get To Va Cave

Just above 4 km from the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, at km 28, is Va Cave, which is considered by cave experts to be one of the most special caves in the region. Its cone-shaped stalagmites are unlike anything else found in Quang Binh Province, or indeed in the world.

Va Cave, which is more than 50 meters away from the back entrance of the world’s largest cave, Son Doong Cave, is also geologically linked to other caves in the region because it has the same ecosystem and geological features.

Things To Know Before Traveling To Va Cave

Entering the Cave of Va is not something you can do as part of a day trip. It’s truly an expedition, because you’re deep in the forest and inside the Phong Nha-Ke Bang limestone cave system. Preparation is essential, and preparation is the key to keeping you safe and in love with your surroundings in the Cave of Va.

  • The entrance is possible only through guided tours, which are generally conducted by registered adventure companies. It involves trekking, swimming, and caving, which makes a guide a requirement.
  • It would be good to be in decent physical condition. There will be long treks through the jungle, crossing rivers, slippery rocks, and cave crawl sections.
  • Travel light, and pack smart. Think quick-drying clothes, good trekking boots, waterproofed luggage, any personal medications, and basic hygiene needs.
  • Rain or water is expected most of the time. You will dive into underground rivers and walk on a wet cave floor.
  • Carefully follow the safety guidelines, always wearing the helmets, headlights, and harnesses that the tour operator provides.
  • Be respectful of the environment in the cave by avoiding contact with the stalagmites and by not littering to preserve Va Cave’s fragile ecosystem.
  • Plan in advance for the best time for travel because the journeys can temporarily halt during the rainy season when water levels are high, which can pose a threat.
